One Man Caravan

Even the ultimate traveler these days rarely leaves home without some sort of vague hope and means of recovery to a safe place in case things "go south". Robert Fulton set out in 1932 to make his way back to the US from England, via Asia. He inquired at what then was the British Automobile Association and received blank stares when he asked for maps to aid in his route planning. Later, he traded valuables for silver on the market to pay his way through certain countries. During the night, he developed the film he took with him. If today you would state you are carrying reel upon reel of film and a camera, people would smile vaguely, nod and quietly sympathize with your family.

The book fuelled the addiction to ride around the world, albeit with much more humble ambitions than Fulton and with a Visa card. Throughout the book are various pictures, made from the film reels (there is also a video available of the film), showing parts of the world as they are only known on old photographs.
